Dinner/theatre: Bella Piatto and the Little Lake Theatre for Escanaba In Da Moonlight by Jeff Daniels.  Please try to get back to Vi by Monday, November 12.
The date: Friday, Nov. 16

The play: "Escanaba in Da Moonlight" - a comedy we can all enjoy.

The plan: We will have dinner at Bella Piatto near the theater. We will order from the menu as long as we are less than 18 in number.

The time: Dinner at 6:00 and to the theater by 7:45.

The cost: the theater tickets are $15.00. Cocktails and dinner are up to your choice.

Friends and relatives are welcome! We just need to have a "head count" by Nov. 12. I will be reserving a block of tickets under South Hills Power Squadron and will need to pay for them so we can get a 10% discount at the restaurant. I guess that means a reservation is binding. I have also reserved space at the restaurant.

Piloting Class:

Currently there is a piloting course offered with Tom Merritt running the class fro his home. There are 6 students and of that two are taking the course as a refresher. With the new information the class has been drastically updated.

 Spring Boating Class:

We are planning to have our Safe Boating class start in just a few weeks.  The class in tentatively scheduled to begin on May 19, at the Beach Club Marina in New Eagle.  We hope to make a solid effort at promoting and having a well-attended class.  Again, the help of the membership will be needed here.  If you have any suggestions regarding advertising and promoting of the class or you would like to assist with the teaching of the class, please contact Jim Stark.  Again, we need the help of everyone to make the class a success and to draw new    members to the Squadron.

USPS Mini Courses:

As always, the USPS has some mini courses available.  If anyone has any interest in one, please let us know and we’ll consider offering it or possibly having one as a meeting program again.

Some of the courses available (or soon to be available) are:VHF and BHF/DSC Radio, GPS, How to Read a Chart,   On-board Weather Forecasting,  Knots for Mariners, Boat Handling Under Power, Sail Trim, Heavy Weather Sailing, On-Board Emergencies, and Using Digital Charts.

Current USPS Course:

We are currently having an Engine Maintenance Course at Jim Stark’s home on Tuesday evenings at 1930 (7:30).  The class has been informative and currently has six students.  We are in the second module of the class and hope to have it completed in a few weeks.

Membership Meeting:

At our January meeting, David Timmins, assisted by Bob Timmins and Jim Stark, gave a great presentation about his trip last summer with the Boy Scouts to Sea Base.  For those who don’t know, one of the prerequisites for going on the trip was to pass our Basic Boating Course.  It is very gratifying to see many of these young men pass our course and be able to go on the trip.  Our February membership meeting will, again, be at the Roxy Café at South Hills Village.  The meeting will be Wed., 14 February—dinner @ 1800 (6:00), meeting @ 1930 (7:30).

We don’t have a program set yet, but we hope to hear a little from Jim Stark about the upcoming basic boating course, which should be beginning at about that time.  We also hope to hear from Dick Toler about how the Boat Show went.  This will be the last meeting before the change of watch, so we will be voting on the recommendations of the Nominating Committee for the 2007 – 2008 officers.  This meeting also happens to fall on Valentine’s Day.  So buy your sweetheart some flowers and candy, and bring her out for a nice dinner with the Squadron.

Pittsburgh Boat Show:

The Boat Show at the Convention Center begins this weekend and will continue next weekend.  As always, Dick Toler will need the help of many of us during the event.  Our days to man the booth at the show are Friday, 26 January and Friday, 2 February.  The hours of the show are from 1000 to 2200.  I believe that Dick has solicited volunteers to fill the time slots, but anyone who would like to come and help will certainly be appreciated.  We can use the help of as many as possible to promote our upcoming spring boating class.  Please contact Dick to offer your services.

Day Trip to

Seven Springs:

The Squadron is currently planning a day trip to Seven Springs Resort.  Seven Springs will have their Winterfest going on from 10 Feb. to 18 Feb.   During this, they offer sleigh rides and other activities.  Dorothy Meloy said many at the Squadron had a good time going on the sleigh ride  several years ago.  Everyone met at Dorothy’s house and left from there.  They also had snacks back there afterward, which Dorothy has graciously offered to provide again.  We are considering either Saturday, 10 February or the following Saturday, 17 February.  We will do whichever date works the best for the Squadron.  Those interested, please contact me or Dorothy as soon as possible so we can set date and make reservations.  The second attachment in this e-mail contains a little more info about it.  You can also talk to Dorothy with any questions.

Change of Watch

Our Change of Watch meeting will be on Saturday, 10 March @ 1130 (11:30 am) at Peter’s Place, 1199 Washington Pike, Bridgeville, PA.

From Rt. 79: take the Kirwin Heights Exit (exit 55) and turn right at the traffic light onto Rt. 50.  Peter’s Place is just down the street on the right (just before the first traffic light).

From the South Hills: from Rt. 19, go to Painters Run Road (turn down the hill next to the Galleria) and follow to Bower Hill Rd., turn left at second light onto Vanadium and follow it all the way to the traffic light at the top where it meets Rt. 50.  Peter’s Place is just across the street to the right.

This is always a very nice meeting.  Please try to attend and help us extend our appreciation to the outgoing Bridge and welcome in the new one.

D-7 Spring Conference: This year’s D-7 Spring Conference will be hosted by the Berea Power Squadron.  It will be on 23, 24, 25 March, 2007, at the Double Tree Inn, Rockside Road, Cleveland, OH.  Come and celebrate 70 years with “Tales of the Seven Seas.”  Reservations must be received by 9 March 2007.  I’m sure more information will be following in the upcoming SouthWind.

I hope you’re all starting off the new year in fine fashion and having a great beginning to 2007.  I hope to see you all  at The Roxy in February.
